Thermal Behavior of Vintage NVIDIA GPU in ASUS A43SV(GT540M): Elevated Idle Temperatures Observed

I have been a long ASUS A43SV user, dated back to 2011 when it first released to the market. I got this device by using Chinese new years pocket money that saved from I still in infant, and at that time I still in high school. This machine help me go through high school, bachelor and masters, even until today I work. When I write this post, it is 14 years old already. The computer comes with i3-2330m that’s upgraded to i7-2670qm. It doesn’t comes with unlocked BIOS that allow dual GPU, and only rely on NVIDIA GT540M for everything, even for basic daily task like word processing.

I tried multiple time to paste, repaste, clean heatsink, throughout the time I own it, but it keep stay at 45*C on average, and when browsing, it’s quite warm about 60-70 *C. The only way to lower it, is by adding external fan, with 5000 rpms, Taffware LC05. It can reduce the temp around 10*C in room temperature. This make me come with question, is it normal temperature for GT540M when light browsing using firefox or edge?

So after several check on the internet in 2025, sadly yes… I just can’t comprehend why, but here are some of the report from other user that use GT540M (non ASUS user but well) :

  1. Max Safe Temp Thread – NVIDIA Forum (archived here)
  2. Max Safe Temp – K53SV – NVIDIA Forum (K53 is 15″ version of A43/K43, archived here)
  3. GT540M – Heating and Throttling (archived here)

Based on those website data, I can see that when idle, it’s around 50*C in room temperature.. Which is sad… Because the heat sink is shared with the CPU right, and seems single fan isn’t quite accommodating. At least my curiosity is answered, and I can remember that the GPU is not temperature friendly.

Well, all I can say, the A43SV in my possession still strong, and I still able to code, write, and compile lot of things. Just the power button is broken, and I need to use screw driver to turn it on. To breath a new life in it, I use Fedora Linux XFCE, and it’s quite handy. Hopefully years to come, the GPU NVIDIA GT540M will keep kicking and able to handle task for simple graphics, and I’m eying to buy a new laptop, but well it takes time to find a good deal!

That’s all. I hope this post, probably if, can satisfy some of people curiosity.
